This project gives me a very good opportunity to contribute to the society through our knowledge. It’s interesting that we can use things that we learned in architecture to provide help for those who needs help. Instead of getting a site in KL, I think we made a huge success of providing help for those organization that is located away from the city, as their condition are actually worse than organization within the city.

Apart from that, through visiting and understanding the condition of the organization, I felt that our life is much more better and we are so lucky to be.  By looking in to the needs of the kids in the house, we came out with solutions and design by using recycle materials that can reduce the carbon emission to the environment.

I felt really happy when I heard the manager there told us  about the furniture we made by using recycle materials actually inspired the kids in the organization of the uses and possibilities of recycle materials, they are really creative and smart, they showed us some of their work and I am quite impressed that a kid at such young age are able to have such high order thinking. Besides providing help to the society, I think we are also success to create an environmental awareness in the young generation.

Throughout this project, I have gained many knowledge and skills, and the most important thing is, we get the opportunity to contribute to the society and provide help who those are in need. As an architecture student, I think using our knowledge to construct something that can solve their problems in life is very meaningful.

Besides, we construct all the product by using recycle materials which can reduce wastage of the materials.  Besides, what I think is important is, we successfully educated the younger generation to adopt recycle habits and reuse concept. By, transferring their rubbish bins into recycle bins by placing sticker on it, the kids are able to dispose their unwanted items according to the stickers on the bins, and this will help them to adopt the habit of recycling.

Through the research and analysis on the Life Cycle Assessment of the materials, I have better understanding towards the impact of these product towards the environment.

After this project , I’ve found some happiness and some deep impact on me after helping those children. Through out the process I found out that children are mirror of myself. We are always role model to them as they can observe what we did, reads our body language and follow as what you did when we work.Just like they will trying to help you painting as well as cleaning the white board  due to their inquisitiveness as this action allow me to feel the sense of happiness for them.

We had successfully created a new and clean environment to them and learn how to transfer recycle materials to a new furniture to them. Let children play with real things and in the real world. There’s no need whatsoever to create an artificial world for them.

As nutshell, I enjoyed every single moment in this project and I hope that the furniture that we created from recycle materials and every effort that we did had benefit them as well as improve their experiences and environment.

Through this project, I have gained an opportunity to ameliorate the condition of Rhema Home through understanding their condition and needs , then come out with solutions in contemplation of their requirements. I have also learnt that sustainability is the key to any design as it minimises both the initial environmental cost and the long-term environmental impact . This leads to us designing and constructing objects that utilises recyclable materials like pallets, PVC pipes, tyre and etc to reduce the material waste but at the same time , create sustainable products which will benefit the organisation. When viewing at the outcome of our product,

I gained lots of inspiration out of the quality of product that can be created through recyclable materials. I felt pleased and when the kids at Rhema home were also inspired by the things we have done as one of the children, Richard even requested the person in charge of the organisation to gather unwanted plywood so that he could re-create what we have done.

Besides, through the whole process of this project, I learned that time management and task organisation is very important in ensuring the execution of work to be carried out successfully through team work and self contribution.

Throughout this project, I’ve finally discovered the meaning of giving out more but expect no return. I am delighted that we are all able to help the others who are in need. From the results, we had really turned their lives into a better stage.

We provided them shoe racks for them to easily organise their shoes, bag racks for the kids to store their bags nicely, badminton netting for entertainment purpose, and a few more. Looking on their smiley faces after receiving our gifts are really an achievement for us.

Besides, I’ve also learned on how to cope and work together a long team members. Finally, I am blessed to work with such efficient and great team mates.

Personally, I felt that this project really benefited me in many ways. Through the execution of this project, we were able to personally understand and assess the needs and requirements of the organization, which is Rhema Home, and develop constructive solutions to the problems by designing and constructing objects from recyclable materials.

As the project emphasized a lot on sustainability, careful steps and considerations were made to ensure that not only the constructed furniture are able to serve its initial purpose in the long run due to its durability, but also to ensure that they pose as little threat to the environment and the occupants as possible. As the organization is located in Seremban, we had to travel far distances to lend a helping hand to those in need. However, the sacrifices made were worth it when we were able to observe the delighted looks of the occupants when they use the newly constructed furniture.

By helping those who are in need, not only we are able to spread a decent amount of love among the society we live in, however, we are also able to create basic awareness and understanding of environmental sustainable design among the occupants we served.

Through this project, I gained a lot of knowledge about doing projects in an environmental friendly way. For example, building racks and bag organizer by using recycled pallet wood. As with this, I had the opportunity to discover about all types of environmental friendly DIYs in order to produce items which is both aesthetically pleasing but also saving the Earth.

Moreover, by doing so, we also gave a good example to the orphans in the house by teaching time to apply the 3R concept (reuse, reduce, recycle). On the other hand, this project also help me to work better in a team as teamwork is essentially needed for a group of 10, I learnt to be more responsible, punctual and can communicate better with my teammates.

We also learnt to think on a more creative and innovative way in order to design furniture that suits the requirement and using recycle materials. Last but not least, I also gained experience in finding sponsers which is indeed very useful in my future. Overall, I am very grateful to had a chance serving the community by using all the knowledge that we had learn in school.

An opportunity to work for the community in a way that we can, and also gain experience. Both for our line of work and learning news ways to further benefit the less fortunate people around us in the future while practicing our profession at the same time.

We learned the methods of convincing others to join in the cause by having them sponsor our work. We also gained experience on how to work with others do get the job done.

I along with my group  managed to figure out specific problems faced by a small yet valuable part of the community, the children of Rehma Home. Through the many tasks that we conducted, we were able to make life better for the occupants of Rehma home.

As a result of the project, we got a taste of the “good feel” from doing welfare and community work. Once tasted, we are surly to crave for more in the future and try our best to make our habitat and better place for everyone

Our site is an orphanage the orphan being take in there is mostly indian . During this assignment I have learned about the way to preserve woods and steps of doing it . by applying the wood shield and wood paint on the wood , it will makes the wood water resistance . Hence more sustainable .

I also learn how to paint the walls and repair the landscape . we did have some trouble on doing the painting and repairing the landscape because of the rainy season , but in the end everything was alright .

Other then learning the way to make the building more sustainable , we also be able to play with the children there . although the site is in Seremban which is very far from here ,  it is very fun to have these kind of assignment .

From this project itself, I can now learn to appreciate what had been given to me. I am a lucky individual to have lived a good 19 years. I learnt that this module On Environment Sustainable Design not only preach us on design itself but also on human condition with relation with the environment. The NGO of our choice,

Rhema Home, an orphanage of 20 over children have lack the chance to observe and experience what healthy and sustainable environment is. Their living condition was once rather poor as they were a little scarce on safe and guaranteed furnishings.

Now, with our help on sustainable design, we have the chance to improve their living condition and also educate them on sustainability. In return, we ourselves had gain knowledge on this particular topic and can be applied through our daily lives.

Chang Huey Yi

After this project, I have learned a lot about environmental sustainable design. Besides the life cycle analysis that was taught in the class, I get to know more in depth about it through my research. In addition, the process of this project is what I learnt most. We learn to have good communication with the person in charge - Mr Johnathan, in order to communicate our ideas and be able to help Rhema Home.

We also cooperated well with our team mates as we get along and solve the problem we met together in the process. This projects enable me to widen up my point of view and think out of the box for everyday item’s design.

Lastly, I am really happy with what we had contribute to Rhema Home, and thank you to all the help we get from our lecturers and sponsors.
